Abstract

COFAM is a research and innovation project co-financed by MIMIT – Innovation Agreements (Horizon Europe, Clean Low-Carbon Industry), developing an advanced digital system to certify and tokenize CO₂ measurements on the blockchain. The initiative makes carbon markets more transparent, secure, and interoperable, contributing to the climate goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN 2030 Agenda.

Context and Call

The project falls within the framework of the Sustainable Growth Fund – Innovation Agreements (DM 31/12/2021 and D.D. 14/11/2022, second call), under the Horizon Europe – Clean Low-Carbon Industry program.

The initiative addresses the need to develop innovative technological tools capable of ensuring accurate measurement, digital certification, and traceability of CO₂ emissions and absorptions.

The opportunity

The growing urgency to combat climate change and comply with the Paris Agreement and the UN 2030 Agenda requires innovative tools for emissions measurement and certification. Carbon markets still suffer from limited transparency, double-counting risks, and complex verification processes. To ensure trust and reliability for public and private actors, a system is needed that guarantees traceability, integrity, and immutability of data, integrating advanced digital technologies such as blockchain, smart contracts, and tokenization. COFAM addresses this need, providing a secure and scalable model to certify stored CO₂ quantities and enhance ecosystem services.

The need

The “CO2 Footprint Authentication Module” (COFAM) project represents an opportunity to develop an integrated solution for the digital certification of ecosystem services. The initiative aims to create an advanced system using sensors, software, and services to digitally certify CO₂ emissions stored by sustainable projects. Collaboration among high-level partners, including blockchain experts, IoT sensor specialists, and machine learning researchers, will ensure the creation of an innovative, reliable, and cutting-edge solution.

The solution

COFAM aims to develop an integrated platform combining advanced digital tools with certification methodologies for managing CO₂ measurements. The proposed solution seeks to translate the results of industrial research into concrete technological components through experimental development. The goal is to create a reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure that enables digital certification of stored CO₂, promoting transparency, traceability, and trust in carbon markets and ecosystem services.

Our contribution

Within the COFAM project, Blockchain Italia plays a central role as a technology partner, contributing to both the industrial research and experimental development phases. The company provides expertise in blockchain, notarization, and tokenization, aiming to define innovative models for digital certification of environmental data and to develop scalable and interoperable technological solutions. This effort supports the creation of a robust and secure infrastructure, aligned with the project objectives and European guidelines for the green and digital transition.

Project Partners

The consortium includes industrial, technological, and academic actors:

  • Webgenesys

  • Blockchain Italia

  • ADPM Drones

  • University of Rome Tor Vergata

  • IUL Telematic University

Expected Benefits

  • Creation of a distributed and immutable registry of CO₂ measurements

  • Increased trust and transparency in voluntary carbon markets

  • Simplified auditing and validation processes through automated notarization

  • Support for European and international climate goals (Paris Agreement, 2030 Agenda)
